The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has developed a standard test method, ASTM D2425-19, for the analysis of compounds belonging to twelve hydrocarbon types in jet fuels. In recent studies conducted at Neste, significant bias for quantitation of some hydrocarbon types was observed when using the ASTM D2425-19 method to analyze jet fuels. Therefore, we have developed a new approach for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of compounds representing the twelve different hydrocarbon types in jet fuels based on both GCxGC/(+)EI TOF MS and GCxGC/FID. The GCxGC/(+)EI TOF MS instrument was utilized for the classification of the compounds, while the GCxGC/FID instrument was utilized for the quantitation of the compounds. The new method has been assessed by using two model compound mixtures with known compositions. Finally, one Jet A-1 fuel sample and three renewable jet fuel samples were analyzed by using the new analytical approach. This approach is currently being evaluated in terms of selectivity, trueness, precision, working range, linearity, LOD/LOQ and ruggedness.
