Despite the growing interest in developing metal-based ligands, tris(3-pyridyl) ligands containing metallic bridgehead atoms have been rarely studied in the literature. In this presentation, we report on the preparation of the elusive metallic anion [EtAl(3-py)3]- (3-Py = 3-pyridyl) (1), the first member of the anionic tris-3 pyridyl family, and its ability to establish heterobimetallic supramolecular arrangements. Unexpectedly, [EtAl(3-py)3]Li shows high water stability in comparison to the [RAl(2-py)3]Li (2) analogues. This unexpected stability, along with their different reactivities, is discussed in terms of Li/Al cooperativity. These bimetallic Li–Al systems offer a unique platform to study Li–Al synergistic effects, and some of the applications of this cooperativity, such as in chiral sensing and supramolecular chemistry, will be discussed.
