Transfer hydrogenation is a useful method for reducing unsaturated substrates. However, most known catalysts require strong base and an inert atmosphere. Ruthenium(II) complexes that are catalytically active for base-free transfer hydrogenation under aerobic conditions have been developed. The ruthenium(II) complexes studied feature bidentate ligands that have a deprotonated primary amide and either an <i>N</i>-heterocyclic carbene or an imidazole donor. The synthesis and characterization of these complexes and the reactivity of these complexes toward base-free transfer hydrogenation in air will be discussed.
