A course in General Chemistry Laboratory is required for most science majors and for pre-health students. The laboratory experience varies tremendously from institution to institution, and its value is debatable. Non-chemistry majors usually have a harder time recognizing its importance, mostly viewing it as another hurdle to go through. In an attempt to address these problems, we designed a new general chemistry laboratory course as a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience complemented by open educational resources to reinforce basic chemistry concepts to highlight critical thinking, scientific literacy, and other transferable skills. In our presentation, we will discuss the challenges and successes of implementing a large general chemistry lab as a CURE and OER course at the Department of Chemistry at Binghamton University.
