How do you know when “Good Enough” is good enough? As chemists and communicators, we break down technical ideas for non-expert audiences. Take teaching in a school. How can you determine what the students need to know to be able to make the information meaningful? This idea goes beyond the standards and objectives set by governments and organizations - it is a fundamental question in science communication. In this example, education standards are the “what” rather than the “how” and “why.” Thus, as we abstract this idea to the larger sphere of chemical communication, we must consider the locus of understanding for any given context. In this presentation, we’re going to break down the idea of “Good Enough” by examining the literature, explore contemporary science communication in a new media environment, and have a discussion to congregate distinct ideas from across the profession.
