The Community of Practice (CoP) concept has been influential for several decades. It was brought to the W-E-F Nexus community as a result of a workshop sponsored by Future Earth and Texas A&M and held in Washington DC in June, 2015. The workshop recommended that Communities of Practice should be developed to support the implementation of the W-E-F Nexus. Subsequent efforts scoped out options for implementing Communities of Practices at different scales (Mohtar and Lawford, 2016). This presentation reviews the concept of the CoP and areas of the W-E-F Nexus where different communities meet and are making contributions to its implementation. The benefits and successes of this approach will be discussed along with some of the challenges these communities face. At the international level the CoP supporting the Group of Earth Observations has been successful in facilitating new activities. The contributions of CoPs in other disciplines along with relevant W-E-F Nexus research committees and university level CoPs are introduced.
