Cytochromes c serve critical roles in a range of biological processes, including aerobic and anaerobic respiration, photosynthesis, and apoptosis. The covalent attachment of heme to the polypeptide is a defining feature of cytochromes c, serving to stabilize structure and to support function. In this talk, our understanding of the roles played by the distinctive heme c structure in cytochrome c functions will be summarized. The impact of heme c structure on redox potential tuning and electronic coupling will be described, along with the role of heme covalent attachment in supporting the dual function of mitochondrial cytochrome c in respiration and apoptosis. Finally, cytochromes c have also found use as components of systems for artificial photosynthesis, and highlights of our work in this area will be summarized.
