The recent synthesis of [K(crypt)[(C5Me5)2UII(NR2)] (crypt = 2.2.2-cryptand, R = SiMe3) suggested that other U(II) complexes bearing the (C5Me5)2UII metallocene fragment would be chemically accessible. Several new (C5Me5)2UIII(anion) precursors complexes were synthesized and crystallographically characterized. Spectroscopic and theoretical analysis of the U(II) species generated by reduction of these precursors will be presented. The electrochemistry of the parent U(III) complexes will be discussed and compared to electrochemistry of related tris(cyclopentadienyl) thorium and uranium complexes in low oxidation states. The reduction potential and Guzei G steric parameters for the (C5Me5)2UIII(anion) complexes will be discussed in relation to the stability of the U(II) reduction products.
