Because of the facile tunability of their electronic and steric properties, phosphines are one of the predominant ligands in transition metal catalysis. Thus, the design of new phosphines has repeatedly led to important developments in homogeneous catalysis. Prominent examples are the continuous advances in palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions, which led to transformations under milder reaction conditions and a broader substrate scope. Thus, phosphines are also a popular choice for industrial large-scale coupling reactions.<br/><br/>Recently, our group has reported on a novel class of ligands, the ylide-functionalized phosphines (YPhos). These ligands possess tunable properties and are easily synthesized in few steps from commercially available materials. In previous reports, the YPhos ligands already showed high activities in gold-catalyzed hydroamination reactions at low catalyst loadings. Likewise, remarkable activities were achieved in Pd-catalyzed aminations of aryl chlorides at room temperature. To get further insight into this remarkable reactivity, we discuss kinetic studies as well as the use of new defined YPhos palladium complexes as precatalysts in catalysis.
