Perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) have progressed rapidly in recent years. The most efficient PVSCs are using lead-based perovskites, which raises some concerns for commercialization because of the potential environmental contamination and human health problems. For large-scale commercialization of halide PVSCs, even with rigorous industrial hygiene program and encapsulation of solar module, the lead ion still could leak to the environment during the whole products life cycle. Therefore, it is important to carefully find an environmentally benign and efficient replacement for lead with a focus on keeping the excellent properties ascribed to its presence in perovskite compounds. Tin perovskite is regarded as an ideal candidate to replace lead perovskite due to its narrow bandgap (~1.2 -1.4 eV), greater charge-carrier mobility and environmental benign character. The theoretical PCE is close to 30% according to Shockley-Queisser limit. In this talk, I will present our recent efforts in developing stable and highly efficient Sn-based perovskite solar cells via materials engineering. We incorporated the ethylenediammonium diiodide additive into a cesium–guanidinium doped formamidinium tin triiodide perovskites and achieved greatly improved device efficiency and stability. Our study demonstrates the benefit of tuning cation sizes and introducing divalent cations to integrate stabilizing factors into pure tin perovskites, creating new routes for efficient and stable lead-free perovskite solar cells.
