Nanomaterials have at least one dimension that is less than 100 nanometers. They are too small to be seen with the naked eye or even with conventional lab microscopes. Thousands of common products, including sunscreens, cosmetics, sporting goods, stain-resistant clothing, tires, and electronics have been manufactured for human use by engineered nanomaterials. They have also been used in medical diagnosis, imaging, and drug delivery, and in environmental remediation including purification of water. Pure drinking water is absolutely essential to assure our survival. Unfortunately, drinking water resources are being polluted with a variety of legacy contaminants and contaminants of emerging concern (CEC).To mitigate these problems, research is progressing to develop new, cost-effective, and environment-friendly technologies. The resilience of environmental chemistry researchers is enabling the utilization of nanomaterials for water purification. This lecture will discuss the advantages and limitations of using nanomaterials for water purification.
