Jiangulan, Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino (GP), has been consumed as tea, food and herbal medicine for thousands of years. The presentation will discuss its chemical composition and the beneficial effects of its gypenosides in cholesterol lowering, body weight control and risk of obesity-related diabetes. The cholesterol-lowering effects may be caused by increasing faecal cholesterol excretion and modulation of genes related with cholesterol absorption and metabolism. Gypenosides reduced diet-induced overweight by increasing brown adipocyte tissue activity and white adipose tissue browning. The expression of genes involved in mitochondrial activity and fatty acid β-oxidation were also increased in both brown and white adipocyte tissues. In addition, the role of gut microbiota in the beneficial properties of Jiaogulan gypenosides will be discussed.
