Fluralaner is a member of the newer class of isoxazoline insecticides (IRAC group 30) that are currently used in companion animal products. It is notable for its low mammalian toxicity and broad-spectrum effects against a number of companion animal arthropod pests, including fleas, mites, lice, and ticks. Recently, fluralaner was evaluated for its potential to control three flies important to animal production worldwide: the horn fly, Haematobia irritans, stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, and house fly, Musca domestica. Topically applied fluralaner was approximately twice as toxic to insecticide susceptible horn flies as permethrin at 24 h. Fluralaner was even more toxic at 48 h (1.6 times). In topical treatments of insecticide susceptible stable flies, permethrin was 46 times as toxic as fluralaner at 24 h. Fluralaner again became more toxic at 48 h by 2.5 times. In topical applications, fluralaner demonstrated equivalent toxicity to permethrin at 24 h in a susceptible house fly strain. Against a highly multi-insecticide resistant strain of house flies, fluralaner exhibited 10-fold cross resistance compared to a susceptible strain at 24 h. Laced with a phagostimulant, fluralaner was approximately 23 times as toxic as imidacloprid, a common active ingredient in fly baits, against imidacloprid susceptible house flies. Fluralaner was approximately 118 times as toxic as imidacloprid at 24 h against an imidacloprid resistant strain. Fluralaner appears to have strong potential as a horn fly or house fly spray product, but aspects of its time to effect as well as cross resistance must first be addressed. Fluralaner-based baits may have a tremendous value where flies have already become heavily resistant to imidacloprid.
