Atomically precise nanoclusters (APNCs) are a novel class of nanomaterials that feature strict monodispersity and a well-defined arrangement of capping ligands. The development of APNCs has been mostly limited to group 11 and attempts to synthesize APNCs of Fe, Co, and Ni have been unsuccessful, owing to the difficulty in stabilizing low-valent Fe, Co, and Ni without supporting ligand decomposition. Herein, I will describe our efforts to synthesize new low-valent, chalcogenide-capped Ni nanoclusters, including Ni26S14(PEt3)10 (1) and Ni30S16(PEt3)11 (2), using Ni(1,5-COD)2 as a Ni(0) source. Both 1 and 2 were characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Additionally, I will describe our preliminary study of the magnetic properties of these two paramagnetic APNCs.
