Solid state organic electrolytes can offer the advantages of low flammability, superior thermal stability and cheap and straightforward production with the ability to form a stable solid-electrolytes interface layer. On the other hand, inorganic electrolytes are typically made from lithium salts and organic solvent which can lead to decomposition at the cathode, hence affecting cell lifetime. In order to address the instability of solvents and increase electrolyte solid interface for better operational safety and design simplicity of batteries, we synthesized series of imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts with high thermal stability and simple synthetic approach. Sulfonate functionalized zwitterions with varying alkyl groups including n-butyl, sec-butyl and 2-ethylhexyl were synthesized based on benzimidazole and imidazole moieties and characterized. The six zwitterions synthesized exhibited high thermal stability (317-341C) which is a desirable property for their application as electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. Their low flammability and environmental friendliness are promising features for various technological applications.
