Bis(amidine) and bis(amidinate) ligands have been well established predominantly in lanthanide and in Group 4 metal chemistry. We have demonstrated that the flexible bis(amidinate) L also serves as a variable ligand platform for a helically-bent CuI4 array [L2Cu4]. Upon dimerization, the octanuclear cluster [L4Cu8] is obtained, which has the longest known linear arrangement of CuI ions embedded in a molecular complex that undergoes closed-shell d10…d10 interactions. Both clusters are highly emissive and therefore serve as potential building blocks for molecular/organic light-emitting devices/diodes (OLEDs). Herein, we report the most recent results of synthetic strategies that lead to a variety of new clusters with unexpected luminescent properties.
