The U.S. Department of Agriculture maintains a research arm, the Agricultural Research Service, ARS, which solves problems of importance to the agricultural community by transfering technology from the lab to commercial entities. Success in this mission is often achieved through collaborations with companies, academic institutions and other federal labs. This presentation will focus on strategies for developing and commercializing bioproducts and biofuels through various partnership arrangements. Discussions will include successful experience with companies, both large and small (start-ups) with examples that incorporate, (1) biofuels from under-utilized feedstocks including solid wastes, (2) biopolymer production of poly(beta-hydroxy alkanoates), PHA, from biogas, (3) novel biodiesel formulations, (4) plastic fillers via torrified biomass to produce value-added recycled products, (5) novel "green" home care products, cosmetics and cleaning agents and (6) domestically-produced tires developed from U.S. crops in collaboration with major tire companies. This presentation will include ways in which ARS has facilitated the development of joint technologies including on-site prototype development, with an explanation of how companies can leverage funding opportunities with and via the USDA. Further discusssion will outline ways in which intellectual property, IP, is develped and protected when working with federal labs such as the USDA.
