Volume 2 of the U.S. International Trade Commission’s report on maximum residue levels (MRLs), released in January 2021, includes a variety of U.S.-focused case studies that explore the impact of low, missing, and changing MRLs on various U.S. produced fruits, vegetables, and other products. Exploring more than 10 crops (apples and pears, cranberries, sweet cherries, tart cherries, celery, sweet potatoes, peas and lentils, nuts, and hops), this report notes a wide array of impacts of low and missing MRLs for U.S. crop production. Throughout the agricultural production process, these case studies cover multiple challenges in MRL compliance, including: the challenges of emerging pest pressures, the variety of compliance challenges in differing growing regions, identifying effective and available substitutes, the impact of MRL violations, the search for alternate export destinations, and unique challenges for fresh and processed products. Additionally, this report highlights the challenges of MRL compliance in the context of highly specialized and costly integrated pest management programs. This presentation will highlight some of the issues found throughout the U.S. case studies covered in this volume.
