In this presentation, several measurement science approaches for assessing surface resiliency of polymeric coatings/composites exposed to different environmental stressors, especially ultraviolet (UV) irradiance, mechanical stresses will be discussed through two case studies: (1) A scientifically-based performance protocol via instrumented scratch techniques over a range of length scales (nano-scratch, micro-scratch and tribological (macro-) scratch tests) for characterization of scratch resistance on automotive clearcoats. Complexity of scratch behavior and the relationship to the corresponding physical properties such as cross-linking density will be discussed. (2) A combination of multi-functional microscopic techniques using laser scanning confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy with quantitative mechanical mapping capabilities, Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy for characterizing surface transformation of a graphene-oxide (GO)/waterborne polyurethane coatings under UV irradiance. Finally, possible GO nanoparticle release induced via a simulated rain process will be discussed.
