Around 70% of the energy in one automotive OEM product line is consumed in the paint shop. 10 years ago, after PPG commercialized B1:B2 compact process, we are seeking new ways to reduce energy consumption for our customers. Project LEAPP, low energy automotive paint process, was proposed for this purpose. In addition to the energy savings, low energy cure is well aligned with five big automotive mega trends: regulatory/compliance, appearance, corrosion, efficiency and electrification. Under this project, in 2018, we successfully commercialized one low energy cure product with Ferrari conventional paint process. Lots of tools and fundamental understanding have been developed. In this talk, we will share some of the key learnings during this Ferrari commercial product launch, and also the low energy cure technology progression to bigger B1:B2 compact process mass market.
