Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been mostly promoted over the years as end-of-pipe polishing methods to remove persistent organic pollutants in water reuse treatment trains. In contrast, there are fewer reports of their efficiency as pre-treatment or stand-alone technologies. In particular, AOPs have the potential to be an alternative to incineration for the treatment of industrial wastewater, especially for highly concentrated streams generated by various sectors, that include chemical and petrochemical, pharmaceutical, microelectronics, etc., for which there exists no gold standard. Conventional techniques relying on biological methods often prove ineffective to deal with the toxicity associated with the many chemicals present in industrial wastewater and in most cases the waste stream is either discharged without treatment or incinerated, despite the prohibitive cost.<br/>In this presentation, I will first show a cost-comparison of various AOPS as pre- or full treatment technologies for industrial wastewater, using phenol as industrially-relevant model pollutant, before moving on towards applications of electro-Fenton for the treatment of real wastewater and toxicity abatement. Finally a vision of integrating electro-Fenton as part of a complex water reuse scheme in the context of Singapore, a country where industrial water demand dominates over other purposes, will be exposed.
