An isotopic dilution GC-MS/MS method was developed and validated to determine the presence of more than 50 persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic organic contaminants in kelp and other seaweeds. Analytes of interest include a wide array of common PCBs, PAHs, and chlorinated pesticides. Kelp samples were processed using microwave-assisted solvent extraction, followed by concentration (turbovap) and cleanup. The kelp being studied was grown in marinas above sediment, where contamination with these analytes varies. This study is a part of a larger effort to evaluate kelp farming as a commercially viable way of extracting nutrients from the Long Island Sound and elsewhere.
