Since the introduction of controlled, precise microwave reactors, microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) has had a significant impact on synthetic chemistry. Reductions in reaction time, increases in yield, and suppression of side product formation have all been described for microwave conditions relative to conventional thermal heating. Microwave synthesis allows one to determine the optimum conditions for carrying out an organic synthesis in one day. This research will describe the synthesis of organic nitrogen heterocycles using classical reaction methods which will be adapted to the use of a CEM Explorer Microwave Reactor to develop the optimum conditions for the synthesis. Allowing many chemical reactions to be completed within minutes, microwave heating has revolutionized preparative chemistry. This is a green technology and is becoming widely adopted in both academic and industrial laboratories. Heterocycles are very important functional groups especially in medicinal chemistry. Not only are they pivotal in the synthesis of drugs but also form part of the structure of a diversity of drugs, vitamins, natural products and biomolecules. In this research a clean green method will be implemented for the preparation of different cyclic imides from acid anhydrides using aniline or N-substituted anilines with microwave radiation as the energy source. These compounds were evaluated according as to their antibacterial and antifungal activity.
