Porous materials have promising applications ranging from chemical separations to catalysis to drug delivery. These materials include fully organic materials, such as conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) and hybrid organic-inorganic materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Presently, CMPs and MOFs are largely prepared under solvothermal conditions using toxic organic solvents and, in the case of CMPs, using precious metal catlaysts as well. Solvent-free syntheses offer a promising alternative to traditional solvothermal syntheses for sustainably preparing these materials on industrially-relevant scale. Herein, we will discuss the ionothermal cyclotrimerization of acetylated monomers as a new strategy for the synthesis of well-defined CMPs. These materials demonstrate promise as next-generation supercapacitors. Second, we will demonstrate that liquid exogenous organic bases can be used to prepare MOFs by liquid-assisted grinding. Last, we will demonstrate that ionothermal syntheses provide a promising new direction for the synthesis of azolate MOFs as well. Overall, we will show that solvent-free syntheses offer a promising alternative for the synthesis of porous materials.
