Water contamination with halogenated volatile organic compounds, such as trichloroethylene (TCE),causes a significant problem in several sites in the United States. Metal oxide semiconductors have emergedas effective photocatalysts for the degradation of halogenated pollutants. This presentation describes thesynthesis and characterization of heterostructured bismuth-based metal oxides nanomaterials decorated withcarbon dots for light-activated degradation of trichloroethylene. Various bismuth vanadate (BiVO) and bismuthoxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, and I) nanosheets were prepared by a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal methodat 80 °C. Subsequently, carbon dots (CDs) were integrated on the surface of the BiOX nanosheets by amicrowave synthesis using urea and citric acid as precursors. The catalytic activity of BiVO, BiOCl, BiOBr,and BiOI and their carbon dot-integrated composites were evaluated in the light-activated degradation ofrhodamine B dye. The pristine BiOX and composite photocatalysts displayed efficient degradation oftrichloroethylene. The new CDs@BiOX composites are promising photocatalysts for the degradation ofchlorinated volatile organic compounds.
