Solid lithium-ion conductors can be essential to the development of advanced lithium-ion batteries with enhanced performance and safety. Among possible materials for lithium-ion conductivity, solid state oxides are excellent candidates due to their tunability and diverse range of structures and properties. We have recently focused on the synthesis of lithium-containing quazi 2D oxides with Ruddlesden-Popper structure, where two or three layers of octahedrally coordinated metals are stacked over each other. We have demonstrated that it is possible to synthesize layered systems where lithium ions are located in inter-stack spaces. We have optimized the composition and structure of these materials to improve their lithium-ion conductivity. We have further enhanced their conductivity by changing the symmetry of the system and introducing defects, which facilitate the hopping of lithium ions. These have resulted in systematic improvements in lithium-ion conductivity. While there is need for further enhancement of lithium-ion transport in these materials to make them suitable for practical battery applications, the success of the above strategies indicates the potential of this family of oxides as solid lithium-ion conductors.
