Lignolix Inc. is a startup commercializing a process to convert lignin-rich biomass waste into valuable, sustainable chemicals. One of the core innovations of the company is a new process to selectively deconstruct lignin, from technical lignin or whole biomass, into a well-defined mixture of aromatic chemicals. Lignolix’s early commercialization strategy is to partner with industrial lignin waste producers to generate high-value, low-volume chemicals for customers in a variety of industries. Through this strategy, the value of lignin waste can be upgraded to as much as thousands of dollars per ton. Lignolix’s long-term vision is to expand production capacity for lignin depolymerization in conjunction with developing a suite of products derivatized from the lignin-derived chemicals, including performance additives, coatings, and adhesives. The talk will introduce some of Lignolix’s strategy, successes, pitfalls, and paths forward, along with discuss how we have advanced from laboratory inspiration to our current startup status in the Delaware Innovation Space.
