There have been approximately five decades since ferrate(VI), an iron complex anion containing Fe(VI), was first attempted for water and wastewater treatment. With multiple treatment functions and little formation of disinfection byproducts, ferrate(VI) has demonstrated a potential in water treatment and reuse, industrial wastewater treatment, and site remediation, particularly for mitigation of emerging contaminants. Although the number of publications on the subject has been dramatically increased, a dilemma is little ferrate(VI) application in practices. This presentation will share my opinions for bridging advances in ferrate(VI) chemistry and its realistic use at a drinking water treatment scenario. This presentation will overview unique properties, physical processes, and chemical reactions of ferrate(VI) in water, while delineating pros and cons of ferrate(VI)-based technologies, identifying technology bottlenecks, discussing the possible roles of ferrate(VI) in traditional and innovative water treatment trains, and outlining future research demands.
