In Texas, many superfund sites have been undergoing treatment for the contaminated soil and groundwater, causing problematic global health and environmental issues. Our research data indicated that interactive nanomaterials that can overcome noted challenges to commingled hazardous waste present at Superfund sites. The hazardous wastes composed of AsO43- and CrO42- were effectively removed using bio-encapsulated mixed iron oxide-based magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). These MNPs will be encapsulated with series of natural product extracts to improve their biocompatibility and mitigate their toxicity. Our results demonstrated the minimization of oxidative stress and cellular damage to the human retinal pigmented epithelium cells when the encapsulated MNPs were used. These in-situ functionalization of NMPs resulted in high removal efficiency of above pollutants containing heavy metal oxo-axions. In this talk, we will demonstration an optimization of the molecular structure of a series of MNPs by a cost-effective colloidal chemistry; investigation of their thermodynamics and interactions with the heavy metal ions; and the mechanism under either electrochemistry reaction or physio-sorption approaches.
