By incorporating a Lewis acidic early transition metal and an electron-rich late transition metal into a single metal complex, a polar metal-metal bond is formed. A family of phosphinoamide-supported zirconium/cobalt complexes with different degrees of coordinative saturation about the two metal centers have been synthesized by varying the ancillary ligands and the number of bridging phosphinoamide ligands. These complexes were structurally and spectroscopically characterized to probe the steric and electronic impacts of these varying ligand environments. The comparative reactivity of phosphinoamide-bridged Zr/Co complexes will be discussed, along with applications toward oxidative bond cleavage.
