Herein we report our group's recent advances in Ni-C bond oxygenation using a novel tacn-derived ligand. The reaction of the organometallic NiII complex with dioxygen or hydrogen peroxide resulted in selective oxygen atom insertion into the Ni-aryl bond in decent yields presumably via accessing a highly reactive NiIV state followed by C(sp2)-O reductive elimination. The unusual reactivities open new avenues for introduction of oxygen functionality with low cost and atom-economy.
