As the role of nickel as a catalyst in cross-coupling reactions expands, gaining a better understanding of nickel-based reactivity becomes increasingly crucial. Nickel has positioned itself as a possible economical alternative to palladium and other late-row transition metals in catalysis due to its high relative natural abundance and unique electronic properties. In order to better understand the reactivity of nickel, a novel set of bidentate and tridentate ligands have been synthesized. These ligands have demonstrated the capacity to stabilize a large breadth of nickel complexes in multiple oxidation states including 1+, 2+, and 3+. Access to individual, characterizable oxidation states of nickel with one set of ligands will improve our ability to interrogate the reactivity of proposed catalytic intermediates. Detailed electronic structure determination of these stabilized complexes by EPR and cyclic voltammetry, in conjunction with organometallic reactivity studies towards a variety of C-C and C-CF3 bond formation reactions, provide important context for high and low-valent nickel in catalytic processes.
