Heterocycles are the 'bread and butter' of modern organic synthesis and play an outstanding role in drug discovery or materials. Classical heterocycles include indoles, isoquinolines, thiazoles, and non-classical heterocycles oxadiazoles or 1-tetrazolylimidazo[1,5-<i>a</i>]pyridines. While many syntheses are described for those heterocycles only very few are performed under mild functional-group-saving conditions and allowing for wide variations of different building blocks. Multicomponent reactions often provide such a mild and general alternative access to heterocycles. Here we describe recent examples of such syntheses from our laboratory.
