In spite of their importance, there are very few examples of 4-alkoxy and 4-phenoxy substituted 1,2-naphthoquinones that have been synthetized and characterized in the literature. In this undergraduate project, we report the traditional and mechanochemical synthesis of a series of 4-phenoxy substituted 1,2-naphthoquinones. These molecules are a perfect target for an undergraduate research project because of their coloration, crystallinity, potential use in redox, medicinal chemistry and their spectroscopic properties.<br/>Moreover, this research combines state-of-the-art techniques in spectroscopy and new methods in synthesis to be put in place and developed. The spectroscopic study of a series of these compounds would allow students to improve their analytical skills and increase their interest in doing research.<br/>We present the importance of student participation as part of an undergraduate research project and the value of shared instrumentation for the chemistry program at the University of Costa Rica.
