This talk will review the recent scientific contributions of Professor Dionisios Vlachos at the intersection of catalysis and reaction engineering. I will argue that this body of work presents a new vision of what the future of catalysis and reaction engineering could look like as the chemical industry reshapes its future towards sustainability.  We will see that simultaneous needs for process intensification, energy and resource efficiency, use of renewable carbon sources, novel reactor concepts, and long-term reductions in greenhouse gas emissions have driven Prof. Vlachos to new frontiers in multifunctional catalysis and innovations in reactor and reactor/catalysis concepts that are likely to shape the future direction of the field.
