The singlet fission solar cell device is a promising route to increasing power conversion efficiency substantially by harvesting two electrons per photon instead of one. This is possible by employing organic layers upon silicon via proper design strategies. The Si(111)|molecule interface is prime territory to exploit singlet fission by sensitizing silicon with singlet fission materials while knowing what is happening at that interface electronically and structurally. The organic molecules of anthracene, tetracene, and perylene diimide are well known singlet fission materials and are coupled to Si(111) surfaces via physical vapor deposition, direct covalent attachment, or both methods. The progress in understanding the singlet fission performance of these interfaces are measured via ultrafast transient reflectivity, Mott-Schottky analysis, AFM, and GIWAXS.
