Process-oriented, guided-inquiry learning is a widely used framework for active learning in chemistry that has been applied successfully in physical chemistry courses.[1] The POGIL-PCL project has applied these principles in the physical chemistry laboratory by organizing a community of instructors to develop and implement experiments using a standard rubric.[2] In-person workshops have sought to strengthen this community by engaging teams of instructors in the testing, review, and development of new laboratory experiments in addition to implementing existing ones.[3] This talk will focus on the implementation of an existing POGIL-PCL experiment, “Can We Make Stew With These Beans?” by the same instructor before and after attending an in-person POGIL-PCL workshop. A reassessment of student laboratory reports will be presented, with a primary focus on problem solving and critical thinking process objectives, along with anecdotal evidence of student satisfaction with the experiment in each implementation. Plans for implementation and development of additional POGIL-PCL experiments also will be discussed, with the eventual goal of applying the POGIL-PCL model to all major experiments in this physical chemistry laboratory course.
