Combining tissue engineering approaches with traditional electronic microfabrication process requires novel design of substrate materials that are amenable to operation as both a cellular scaffold and circuit board. Poly(octamethylene maleate (anhydride) citrate) (POMaC) is an elastomer that has previously been shown to be biocompatible, bioresorbable, and supporting of resident 3D cell cultures.  Additionally, POMaC provides a wide range of tunable mechanical properties and chemical functionality <i>via </i>processing conditions. Further engineering of POMaC for integration with microelectronic systems fabrication has been investigated, and optimal processes have been defined for developing tissue-integrating implantable medical devices. The effect of monomer feed ratio and porogen composition was systematically investigated to optimize both thin film processing and mechanical properties.  Biomolecular photopatterning of POMaC thing films was demonstrated and verified via fluorescence imaging. Lastly, conventional spin-coating and photolithography techniques were used to fabricate multi-layer circuit boards. The results demonstrate the engineering of “dual-functional” POMaC substrates utilized as a combined tissue scaffold and circuit board.   Future efforts will investigate the integration of the material system with therapeutic cells, sensors, and power management circuits.
