Bob Lichter was a candidate for the 2004 ACS Board of Directors for which his candidacy statement included the statement: "Diversity and inclusiveness remain watchwords of strength in the chemical sciences. As a profession and as a human society, we cannot afford to dismiss the quality, vigor and significance of the intellectual and creative capacity that the multiple perspectives of people with diverse backgrounds and experience bring to the venture. ACS's substantial leadership in this arena, especially the ACS Scholars Program, which I helped to shape; and the Board-appointed Implimentation Team on Minorities in Academia, which I chair, will be propelled even further when diversity and inclusiveness are viewed not as the purviews only of the Committee on Minority Affairs, WCC, and the Committee on Chemists with Disabilities, but are embedded in every ACS Committee, division and local section." Bob's activities with diversity and inclusiveness were perhaps most visible within ACS activities, but his reach was even broader in his careers at Hunter College, Research Corporation, Stony Brook, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and his activist career in Merrimack Consultants which willbe the focus of my remarks.
