The development of safe and effective vaccines has saved millions of lives worldwide and dramatically reduced the burden of infectious diseases. While vaccine modalities such as live attenuated and inactivated viruses tend to have higher inherent immunogenicity profiles, many vaccine antigens suffer from low immunogenicity requiring the use of an adjuvant to achieve the desired immune response. Historically, marketed vaccines have relied on aluminum-based systems to boost immune profiles; however, there is increased interest in developing novel adjuvant systems that could improve responses in the pediatric and elderly patient populations as well as reduce the number of doses required to achieve protective immunity. To that end, there has been an emergence of emulsion and lipid-based platforms that can also be modified to contain immune and TLR agonists resulting in selective skewing of the immune response.  This talk will focus on the development and use of a lipid-based adjuvant platform for application in infectious disease vaccines.
