Organic chemistry is known to be a difficult subject for many undergraduate students because of its abstract nature. Often, the difficulty leads students to experience a decline in academic performance. Infographics are educational tools using a combination of visual images and words to convey scientific information, such as the relationship between three-dimensional molecules and their reactivity. Further research on the development of new methodologies like infographics to communicate chemistry clearly and effectively is required to help students increase their success in undergraduate chemistry classes. A study is performed to investigate the effects of infographics as supplementary learning material. Students (n=15) are asked to complete two online surveys containing questions about a supplied infographic on the SN2 reaction, a common organic chemistry concept that is previously covered in class. Students (n = 23) are asked to complete two online surveys relating to a supplied infographic on the concept of chirality, a key concept covered organic chemistry. Students' responses are assessed through open-ended and multiple-choice questions. Qualitative data is coded and then analyzed with the quantitative data to explore students’ understanding of the infographic. The results reveal that the use of infographics as a means of supplementary learning material increases students’ interest, comprehension, and retention of the lecture material. The use of infographics benefits students’ learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Infographics create a more comprehensive understanding that can allow students to feel better prepared for and more confident about future studies and careers involving organic chemistry.
