The subtractive colour and cosmeceutical properties of novel colourants from Sacoglottis gabonensis ethyl acetate (SGEA) and Hibiscus sibdariffa ethyl acetate (HSEA) extracts; Sacoglottis gabonensis ethanol (SGE) and Hibiscus sibdariffa ethanol (HSE) extracts and Sacoglottis gabonensis distilled water (SGDW) and Hibiscus sibdariffa distilled water (HSDW) extracts were evaluated. The individual and mixed colourants were extracted using Soxhlet apparatus and analyzed for their subtractive potentials using the UV-Vis spectrophotometer, pH, thermometer and human visualization. The extracts were then utilized as active ingredients, additives and preservatives in the formulation of body cream. Results for the study revealed that, the subtracted colours obtained by human visualization for SGEA, HSEA, SGE, HSE, SGDW and HSDW extracts were between the ranges of red, reddish-brown, yellow and pinkish-red region of the visible colour spectrum. UV-Vis results for all studied extracts showed wavelength of absorption between 640-665nm and absorbance values within 1.715-1.809. The pH values were within the range (1.54-4.58) at an approximate temperature of 34.0oC. The results for the subtracted colours observed in the red region of the visible colour spectrum had a slight difference in their wavelength of absorption for cream Types A, B, C and D for the distilled water extract of the samples (SGDW and HSDW). The pH values of the subtracted colour obtained for distilled water extract of the samples at different concentrations (2:1 for SGDW and HSDW; 2:1 for HSDW and SGDW respectively) were 3.84 and 4.02, while the pH value for the formulated cosmeceutical products was 6.0 for cream Types A-D which is in a range of the acceptable pH value of body creams. Some sensory attributes reported by volunteers and an overall acceptance by a 10-point scale confirmed that all extracts (SGEA, HSEA, SGE, HSE, SGDW, HSDW) had constituents appropriate for use in cosmeceuticals.
