The need to address and reduce the whole lifecycle GHG emissions of buildings towards a net-zero ambition is emphasized in numerous initiatives and campaigns worldwide. However, this has led to a confusing plethora of various terms and definitions describing a net-zero GHG emission building approach. This talk begins with an international showcase of how to define (net) zero greenhouse gas emission buildings and an overview of results of an international survey. This is followed by a Norwegian showcase of Net Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB) and Neighbourhoods (ZEN) including an overview to the ZEB definition and key findings from pilot buildings. The talk concludes with reflections on what this means for designers and highlights future challenges and opportunities both locally and internationally.
