The Army Research Office’s (ARO) Mechanical Behavior of Materials (MBM) Program seeks materials science investigations that enable emerging technologies for performance under extreme and highly variable operational conditions.  This talk will discuss the current thrusts of the MBM program: (1) ‘Extreme Mechanical Behaviors’, which focuses on materials that demonstrate dramatic improvement over the state-of-the-art in energy dissipation, toughness, stiffness, hardness and resiliency; and (2) ‘Active Mechanical Response’, which focuses on materials that actively respond to dynamic loading environments through rapid adaptation of shape, topology, and/or mechanical properties.  The projects supported by this portfolio are expected to enable transformative capabilities for the future Soldier in the areas of protection, maneuver, and sustainability.  In addition, this talk will provide information about the other materials science programs at ARO, as well as tips for approaching program managers with impactful research ideas.

Background: The Army Research Office, founded in 1951 and based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., has more than 100 scientists, engineers and support staff, who manage the Army’s extramural research program.  Our program managers competitively select and fund basic research proposals from educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and private industry to increase fundamental knowledge and understanding in the chemical, life, physical, engineering, materials, mechanical, computing, information, network, mathematical, earth, and social sciences, related to long-term national security needs.  The results of these research efforts are transitioned to the Army research and development community, industry, or academia for future technological superiority of our Soldiers, Army and nation. Our research represents the most long-range Army view, with system applications often 20-30 years away.

SMASIS2020 - Virtual Conference

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
