The BODIPYs (difluoroboron-dipyrromethenes) are highly versatile neutral molecules with high quantum yields and good photostability.1 BODIPYs have been used for variety of applications viz. as biological labels, as fluorescent switches and sensors2, and as anti-cancer agents in PDT (photodynamic therapy).3 In this poster, the synthesis and photo-physical studies of NIR BODIPYs derivatives will be discussed. Substitution at meso-position of dipyrrin core with aromatic groups like N-butylcarbazole/ N-butylphenothiazine/ benzothiadiazole resulted in the BODIPYs with red emission (650-800 nm) and large Stokes shifts (~160 nm).4-5 Also, the water soluble thioglycosylated BODIPYs were prepared and evaluated for the biological applications.6 The in-vitro studies of the synthesized BODIPYs on HeLa and A549 cancer cells, indicated significant localization in the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria of the cancer cells. These BODIPYs can be potentially used for live cell imaging and as theranostic agents for cancer.
