Mesoporous silica MCM-41 with unique properties such as uniform hexagonal mesoporous structure (pore size 2-10 nm), good thermal and chemical stability and high surface area has attracted a great research interest due to its wide application in a variety of areas such as catalysis, adsorption, separation, drug delivery etc [1]. Here in, we have synthesized a MCM-41 supported copper (II) Schiff base complex via grafting method. The Schiff base ligand [2] is anchored on 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane functionalized MCM-41 and the resulting material on reacting with CuCl2.2H2O results in the formation of MCM@CP@PYO@Cu complex. The complex is characterized by a number of techniques such as FT-IR, TGA, Low angle Powder XRD, SEM, TEM, MP-AES and N2 sorption. The catalytic activity of the prepared complex was tested in the formation of benzimidazole derivatives and the results obtained demonstrated that the complex could serve as an efficient catalyst for this reaction. Reusability, low catalyst loading, mild reaction conditions are the main advantages of the catalyst.
