Cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes are well-known for their highly tunable optoelectronic properties. Designing of heteronuclear metal complexes by appending second metal centre to the emissive cyclometalated Ir(III) core may provide binding site for amino acids, nucleic acid or enzymes. The rational synthesis of trinuclear Pt-Ir-Pt complexes with two platinum(II) centres appended to the cyclometalated or ancillary ligand of the iridium(III) centre show promising sensing ability. The replacement of chloride in the fourth coordination site of two square planar platinum metal centres with the imidazole nitrogen or sulphur atom of histidine/Guanine/cysteine is evident from the change in luminescence intensity upon binding these biomolecules.
