Ammonia is an important raw material widely used for varied industries like agriculture, explosives, paints, and medicine. Presently, the century-old Haber Bosch process is primarily used to manufacture ammonia, by the reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen at high pressure (~300 atm) and high temperature (~550ºC), hence it is an energy as well as a capital process resulting in global 2% greenhouse gas emissions annually. From the environmental sustainability aspect, there is a real need to develop energy-efficient and environment-friendly processes for ammonia production. The electrochemical nitrogen reduction (ENRR) is a solution. The inert and stable nature of the N≡N bond and competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) during the ENRR process, the bottleneck lies in the deficiency of efficient electrocatalyst with superior selectivity and high activity for the electrochemical conversion of nitrogen into ammonia. Thus the solution lies in the design of specific active site generation of the electrocatalyst for enhanced ENRR performance. Herein, we demonstrate metal phthalocyanine (MPc) nanostructure has a well-defined MN4 configuration as a model electrocatalyst for ENRR due to the higher number of active sites, facile electron transfer, specificity, and selectivity. The MPc taken for this study are CoPc which showed an ammonia yield rate of 108 μg h−1mg−1cat and Faradic efficiency of 28% at -0.3 V vs. RHE respectively using 0.1 M HCl as an electrolyte. The isotopic labelling experiment and various control investigation led to validate the nitrogen source in NH3 formation. This manifold study provides brand new insightful understanding on the active sites and origination of catalytic activity of CoPc for their NRR applications.
