Industrial urea production involves two steps, one is the synthesis of ammonia [N2 + H2 = 2NH3] and the second is urea production with the help of ammonia and carbon dioxide gas [NH3 + CO2 = CO(NH2)2]. Both processes require high temperature and pressure hence the processes are expensive and also environmentally hazardous. We have designed an electrochemical technique to produce green urea in solitary progress at normal temperature and pressure.
In our work, we manifest a single molecule having several active sites responsible for the simultaneous reduction of N2 and CO2 gases for the production of urea. Due to the presence of metal center, pyrrolic nitrogen, and pyridinic nitrogen, copper phthalocyanine nanotubes play an important role in the formation of urea. Copper phthalocyanine nanotubes catalyst show the maximum yield rate of 143.47 μg h−1 mg−1cat and Faradic efficiency of 12.99% at –0.6 V vs. RHE after the two hours of duel electro-reduction process utilizing 0.1 M KHCO3 as an electrolyte solution.
