Porphyrins play a vital role in photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes in natural systems and have extensively been studied for their utilization in biomimetic studies [1]. Trans-A2B2 porphyrins as well as β-functionalized porphyrins are utilized in the field of solar cells, nonlinear optics (NLO), ion-sensing, host-guest interaction and catalysis [2]. Herein, we are reporting the synthesis, spectral and redox properties of free base trans-A2B2 porphyrins (1 and 2) having a D-π-D system and their Zn(II) complexes (1a and 2a). These porphyrins contain electron donor moieties such as mesityl or p-methoxyphenyl and phenothiazine moieties at the meso-positions. The free base trans-A2B2 porphyrins (1 and 2) were synthesized using modified MacDonald method followed by metal insertion (1a and 2a). These trans-A2B2 porphyrins are ideal candidates for NLO applications, host-guest interaction and as a hole-transporting materials (HTMs). These porphyrins were characterised by various spectroscopic techniques and single crystal XRD. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of Zn(II) trans-A2B2 porphyrins (1a and 2a) exhibited a red-shifted Soret band and decrement in Q bands compared to free base trans-A2B2 porphyrins (1 and 2). These porphyrins exhibited cathodic shift in their first oxidation potential as compared to MTPPs due to the presence of donor moieties at meso-positions (Figure 1). In this presentation, we will discuss about the facile synthesis, spectral and electrochemical properties of trans-A2B2 porphyrins and their utilization in NLO studies in detail.
